Most businesses run on workarounds.
Requests come in through email, Slack, and spreadsheets. Someone copies data from one system into another by hand. Someone else rebuilds the same report every Friday, and leadership still asks the same questions on Monday.
None of that is a people problem. It’s a systems and process problem. The right setup can route the work, automation can handle the copying, and good reporting can answer the questions before anyone asks. It just takes someone who understands all three to fit them together.
That’s the job: I make the work flow and I make it visible. In practice that means Jira and service management, reporting and BI, and automation and process improvement, separately or together.
Who I am
I’m Josh. I started out in the military in aviation operations then turning wrenches on helicopters. Since then I’ve quoted and coordinated access control installations, did inventory and finance investigations in manufacturing, led a team of inventory integrity analysts, and spent the last 8 years in business intelligence and business systems. With a common thread of automating and making work easier running through all of those roles.
What it means in practice is that I’ve been the person doing the work and the person building the report about it. I design systems for the people who actually use them, and reporting for the people making decisions.
Along the way I built and ran company-wide BI reporting for three years, administered Jira for a company serving hundreds of customers with thousands of users, implemented Jira Service Management and Assets/CMDB from scratch, and automated the manual steps between systems wherever I found them. I keep seeing the same pattern: the data is all there, but the tools don’t talk to each other, and nobody has time to make them talk.
